A late-night political meeting between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso has stirred fresh excitement in Nigeria’s opposition circle, coming just hours after Obi cleared a key hurdle in the race toward the 2027 presidential primaries.

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi paid a courtesy visit to former Kano State Governor Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso on Tuesday night, shortly after being cleared by the Nigeria Democratic Congress screening committee for the party's presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso confirmed the meeting through a post shared online on Wednesday, describing Obi as his brother and expressing optimism about the party's future.
He said the visit took place at his Maitama residence in Abuja and described the prospects ahead as bright and full of promise.
The meeting comes days after both Obi and Kwankwaso formally joined the NDC in early May 2026, following their departure from the African Democratic Congress.
The move has been widely seen as a significant shift in Nigeria's opposition politics ahead of 2027, with speculation growing that the two may team up on a joint presidential ticket.
Obi was cleared unopposed by the screening committee on Tuesday, having reportedly been the only aspirant to purchase the presidential nomination form.
The two leaders, who ran for president on different platforms in 2023, have since been in discussions about building a stronger opposition front against the ruling All Progressives Congress.
