Alhassan Ado Doguwa, a well-known member of the All Progressives Congress from Kano State, has moved to quash speculation about drug use after a video circulating online showed him with a noticeably blue tongue during his party's primaries.

He firmly denied any connection to Rohypnol a sedative that has been linked to abuse in various contexts and instead attributed the discolouration to a blue-coloured candy he had been eating.

In his defence, Doguwa pointed fingers at what he described as enemies and the influence of the devil, framing the controversy as a deliberate attempt to tarnish his reputation ahead of the 2027 elections.

The explanation, however, did little to quiet public scepticism.

Social media users largely greeted his response with mockery and disbelief, with many questioning whether "sweet blue candy" was simply a cover story for something else.

One widely shared reaction sarcastically reframed his own words back at him, suggesting the candy description was too convenient to be believable.

Others called for a formal drug test to settle the matter conclusively.

A minority of commenters came to his defence, pointing out that common everyday sweets such as blue Mentos are perfectly capable of staining the tongue, and that the reaction online may have been an overreach.

The incident has nonetheless added an unexpected and colourful moment to the political season, drawing widespread attention at a time when parties across Nigeria are deep in the business of selecting candidates for the upcoming general elections.
