The wife of Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, has distributed 5,000 packs of hybrid non-GMO seeds to residents across the state as part of efforts to encourage household gardening and subsistence farming.

The distribution was carried out through her non-governmental organisation, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, which is focused on promoting healthier lifestyles, greener communities, and improved food security.

Since launching the initiative in 2024, the Anambra First Lady has now distributed a cumulative total of 25,000 seed packs to farmers and residents across the state.

Each pack contains a variety of carefully chosen seeds including corn, green vegetables, cabbage, pepper, tomatoes, and okra, enabling families to grow fresh, organic produce from their homes and local communities.

Dr Soludo used the occasion to encourage residents particularly women to embrace gardening and small-scale farming, not only as a means of feeding their households but also as a way of generating surplus produce that could feed into local and international markets.

She expressed her belief that home gardening goes beyond food production, describing it as a practical path to household economic empowerment, environmental sustainability, and healthier living.

She also noted that full details of the distribution process would be made available to the public in due course, urging interested residents to take advantage of the opportunity.

The initiative reflects a growing push across various Nigerian states to tackle food insecurity at the grassroots level by empowering individuals and families to produce their own food.
