The Anambra State Government has approved the holding of the Imo Awka Festival 2026, reversing an earlier decision that suggested the cultural event should be postponed over security concerns linked to a political primary scheduled for the same day
The Anambra State Government has granted approval for the Imo Awka Festival 2026 to proceed as planned on Saturday, reversing its earlier position that had called for the event to be postponed.
The government had initially raised concerns about the festival coinciding with the primary elections of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the state's ruling party, arguing that having two major events on the same day would necessitate splitting security resources a situation it considered unwise.
The Imo Awka Festival is a cultural celebration observed by the people of Awka to honour the deity associated with fertility and purification.
However, in a letter from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, signed by the commissioner, Udorji Amedu, and addressed to the President General of the Awka Development Union with copies to the Traditional Ruler of Awka, His Royal Highness Gibson Nwosu (Eze Uzu II), and the leadership of the Ozo Awka Society the government confirmed that the festival may go ahead on May 23, 2026.
The approval came after the Awka Development Union and the Ozo Awka Society submitted formal written assurances to the government, committing to providing additional security and ensuring the event is conducted in an orderly fashion.
Despite granting the approval, the government attached a number of conditions to guide the conduct of participants. Celebrants were directed to ensure free movement of both people and vehicles by refraining from blocking or closing any public roads.
Masquerades and all other participants were strictly prohibited from carrying or displaying dangerous weapons.
The government also warned against any form of harassment, intimidation, flogging, or assault of road users by masquerades or any individuals during the festival.
All participants were urged to conduct themselves decently and in a manner that truly reflects the cultural values of the Awka people.
The state government also used the occasion to congratulate the Traditional Ruler and the people of Awka on the festival, while urging them to ensure the celebrations remain peaceful and orderly throughout.
