The management of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology in Wudil, Kano State, has called off a proposed student field trip to New Bussa in Niger State, citing security concerns raised by parents and other stakeholders.
The university explained that the decision was made by Vice Chancellor Prof. Musa Yakasai following a review of the security situation in the proposed location, which was set to host an eight-week mandatory field exercise for Level 400 Fisheries students.
In a statement issued on Thursday by Deputy Registrar for Information and Public Affairs, Abdullahi Datti Abdullahi, the institution clarified that the Vice Chancellor had actually rejected the New Bussa trip well before public anxiety over the matter began to grow.
As an alternative, the Vice Chancellor directed the Department of Fisheries to identify a safer venue for the exercise, resulting in the selection of Tiga Dam in Kano State as the new destination.
The university was emphatic that student safety and welfare are non-negotiable priorities, both on and off campus, and moved to reassure parents that there was never any intention to expose students to risk.
Parents and guardians were urged to remain calm, with the institution firmly stating that no plans exist to send students to New Bussa or any other location considered unsafe.
The clarification came in response to growing opposition from parents of the more than 30 students involved, many of whom had expressed alarm over the prospect of their children travelling to Niger State amid the security challenges currently affecting the region.
