The National Identity Management Commission has alerted Nigerians to a fraudulent social media message claiming access to a free NIN correction portal.

Nigerians have been cautioned by the National Identity Management Commission about a false social media post that claims a free NIN correction portal has opened for data corrections.

The commission characterized the letter and its links as a phishing scheme intended to trick gullible people in a public notice posted on its social media account on Tuesday.

"NIMC alerts the public to a bogus social media post that purports to access a free "Correction Portal" using malicious links. The commission declared, "This is a phishing scam."

Citizens were reassured by NIMC that the National Identity Database is safe and shielded against illegal access.

The commission warned Nigerians not to click on dubious links that are circulating online, saying, "We assure citizens that the National Identity Database is secure and fully protected."

For any requests for data change, updates, or corrections, the agency particularly instructed the public to "Do not click any unauthorized links" and to rely solely on official methods.

NIMC advises people to contact authorized enrollment centers across the country or utilize the official self-service site to update or modify their National Identification Number information.

The commission requested that users utilize its official portal to access its self-service platform and use its official communication channels to confirm information and updates.

The alert coincides with increased worries about online frauds that target identity and personal data, with con artists increasingly luring victims with phony websites and social media posts.

Nigerians were advised by NIMC to exercise caution and report any suspicious messages purporting to provide identity-related services on unapproved sites.
