President Tinubu is set to address a joint sitting of the Senate and House of Representatives on June 12 and will also deliver a national broadcast to mark Nigeria's 27th Democracy Day.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, made this known while inaugurating a committee tasked with coordinating the anniversary activities in Abuja on Tuesday.

With just ten days to the event, Akume urged committee members to get to work without delay.

The celebrations will span an entire week, featuring a press conference on June 4, Friday prayers on June 5, an inter-denominational church service on June 7, a public lecture on June 9, youth and women-focused programmes on June 10, and a gala night to round off the occasion on June 12 itself.

Akume noted that given the current economic climate and the government's commitment to spending responsibly, this year's commemoration would be kept relatively low-key.

He also paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 pro-democracy struggle, particularly the late MKO Abiola, describing their sacrifices as the bedrock of Nigeria's democratic journey.

The SGF added that the occasion would serve as an opportunity for the Tinubu administration to highlight the progress it believes it has made in strengthening democratic institutions and pushing forward its reform agenda despite economic headwinds.

The inter-ministerial committee overseeing the event draws members from across government, including several ministers, security chiefs, and senior presidential aides, and is responsible for planning and executing all approved activities for the celebration.
