Osun Declares Public Holiday for Islamic New Year Celebration

Residents across Osun State are set for a midweek break as the government announces a public holiday to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year.

The Osun State Government has declared Wednesday, June 17, 2026, a public holiday to mark Hijira 1448AH, the beginning of the Islamic New Year.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Rasheed Aderibigbe, and obtained in Osogbo on Tuesday.

In the statement, Aderibigbe extended greetings to Muslims across the state on behalf of the state government, expressing hope that the celebration would bring peace, prosperity, and unity to Osun State.

He also urged residents to set aside rancour and disharmony, and to join wholeheartedly in festivities that promote unity and togetherness.

The Islamic year 1448 AH commenced on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, following the sighting of the Muharram crescent moon, and the new lunar year is expected to run through to approximately June 5, 2027 on the Gregorian calendar.
