The wife of Anambra State Governor, Nonye Soludo, has directed the state Commissioner for Health to provide specialised medical care for a 10-year-old boy whose body was allegedly scalded by his caregiver, identified as Mrs Chisom Chukwunyere.
The boy reportedly suffered severe burns after melted plastic was allegedly poured on his body by the woman, reportedly over an offence yet to be disclosed.
Residents of Awada, Obosi, near Onitsha, where the woman and her family reside, reportedly rescued the boy after noticing his distress and subsequently apprehended her, handing both her and her husband, Chukwudi Chukwunyere, over to the police.
Reacting to the incident, Mrs Soludo described herself as deeply saddened and disturbed by the alleged ab*se suffered by the boy, stressing that no child deserves such cruelty regardless of any wrongdoing, and that she found the reports from the incident deeply troubling as a mother.
She said she had requested that everyone connected to the act be brought to justice, including the husband, who she insisted must answer for a crime that occurred under his roof, adding that those responsible must face the full weight of the law.
She reaffirmed that the Anambra State government maintains zero tolerance for any form of abuse against children and women, pledging to personally follow up on the case to ensure justice is served.
She urged the public to remain vigilant and speak up against abse, thanking those who helped bring the incident to light.
Mrs Soludo further disclosed that she had spoken with the Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, requesting that the child be transferred from his current hospital to a more suitable facility where he could receive optimal treatment and specialised care.
She also pledged to personally take responsibility for his rehabilitation, vowing to ensure he receives full support toward healing physically, emotionally, and psychologically.
The arrested couple remain in police custody, with the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirming that investigations are ongoing and that prosecution will follow once concluded.
