Personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship Delta have uncovered a camouflaged crude oil storage site used for crude oil theft activities within the creeks of the Niger Delta.

The discovery was made during an operation codenamed "Delta Sentinel," carried out following credible intelligence on suspected crude oil theft activities around the Ugbokodo Creek axis in Delta State.

This was disclosed in a statement issued in Warri on Wednesday by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho.

According to the statement, naval personnel, supported by aerial surveillance, conducted a thorough search of the area.

Although the location initially showed no signs of suspicious activity, further observation and analysis of drone imagery revealed a large, freshly dug reservoir that had been deliberately concealed beneath leaves, planks, wood, and dense vegetation to avoid detection.

A subsequent search of the site led to the recovery of about 17,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil stored within the hidden reservoir.

Folorunsho explained that the site bore clear signs of recent crude oil theft activity and was believed to have functioned as a temporary storage point within an illicit supply network.

He noted that the discovery underscored the increasingly sophisticated tactics being employed by criminal elements to sustain crude oil theft operations, even as the integration of intelligence-led operations and aerial surveillance continues to strengthen the Navy's capacity to detect and disrupt such illegal activities.

He added that the reservoir, recovered products, and related materials were handled in line with standard operational procedures, effectively cutting off economic saboteurs from resources meant to fuel further criminal activity.

Folorunsho reaffirmed the Navy's commitment to sustaining pressure on crude oil theft networks under Operation Delta Sentinel through continuous surveillance, intelligence-driven operations, and coordinated efforts aimed at safeguarding Nigeria's critical energy infrastructure and economic interests.

Crude oil theft remains a persistent challenge in the Niger Delta, contributing significantly to national revenue losses and environmental degradation, with criminal networks often relying on sophisticated concealment methods, including underground reservoirs and illegal pipeline connections, to siphon and store stolen crude.
