Staff of Erhavwe Secondary School in Delta State have recounted their ordeal following an att@ck on the school premises allegedly orchestrated by a female student after a teacher confiscated her mobile phone during class.

The Maths teacher, Charles Ovwigho, said he seized the student's phone after she was caught watching a film and distracting other pupils, in line with school and government policy prohibiting students from bringing phones to class.

He said the student subsequently failed to produce her Maths notes when requested, presenting another student's notebook with her name written over it on two occasions.

Shortly after, a group of young men stormed the school demanding to know the teacher who had "beaten" the student an allegation Ovwigho firmly denied, saying he had only been at the school since May 5 and did not even know the student personally.

"God will punish those saying this. I don't even know the girl. I was just transferred to the school on May 5," he said.

Vice Principal Lucky Otuaga said he rushed out of his office upon hearing commotion and was att@cked from behind while attempting to use a cane to separate the intruders from the teacher.

He also dismissed allegations of sexual misconduct, saying no teacher had faced such accusations during his time at the school since 2020.

The Education Committee Chairman for the community, Edematie Sunday, confirmed that two of the att@ckers were arr£sted and the matter subsequently charged to a magistrate's court in Agbarho. He said he sustained an injury to his left eye during the incident.

The school's principal, Patience Ekakitie, said efforts were underway to withdraw the matter from court for an amicable settlement, with the next court date scheduled for June 29.

The female student has since been placed on indefinite suspension.

A video of the att@ck had earlier circulated online and attracted widespread cond£mnation.
