President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given his approval for a significant overhaul of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), with the orientation camp programme set to be extended from three weeks to six weeks as part of wider efforts to boost youth development, national integration and skills acquisition.

The reform is expected to considerably alter the structure of the NYSC scheme by lengthening the orientation period to make room for additional vocational training, civic education, paramilitary drills, entrepreneurship development and national values reorientation for corps members nationwide.

Persons familiar with the matter said the extension is part of continuing reforms intended to make the NYSC scheme more impactful and better suited to present-day national realities, especially regarding security awareness, job creation and youth empowerment.

The expanded six-week orientation is also expected to give corps members more thorough training in leadership, community development, digital skills and self-reliance initiatives ahead of their deployment to places of primary assignment.

Government officials say the reform is meant to enhance the overall effectiveness of the scheme while arming Nigerian graduates with practical knowledge that can boost their employability and lessen reliance on white-collar jobs.

The NYSC orientation camp has historically run for 21 days since the scheme began in 1973, making this latest move one of the most far-reaching structural changes to the programme in decades.

Further details regarding the implementation framework, transition process and commencement date are expected to be announced by the Federal Government and NYSC authorities in the days ahead.
