A teenage girl has d!ed after being crushed by a lorry while celebrating France's World Cup victory against Morocco.

The 17-year-old was among thousands of fans partying on the streets of Aulnoye-Aymeries in France.

A police spokesperson said she had climbed onto the side of a lorry along with others but fell onto the road, after which she was crushed by the same vehicle.

Efforts were made to revive her, but she was pronounced d£ad at the scene shortly after midnight.

The driver of the truck has been arrested, and his blood will be tested for drugs and alcohol.

Three people who witnessed the tragedy have been hospitalised and treated for minor injuries and extreme shock.

Police have launched a probe into the fatal accident.

It has become common practice in France for football supporters to climb onto the sides of lorries and the roofs of cars following major games, despite the authorities describing the act as extremely dangerous.

The previous night, more than 200,000 police officers were deployed across France in one of the largest clampdowns on football-related riots in recent history.

Authorities had feared a repeat of the violence witnessed across Paris after Paris St Germain defeated Arsenal in the European Champions League final in late May, an incident that led to 890 arrests.

Drones monitored the skies as politicians appealed for calm between supporters of the North African nation and its former coloniser.

However, only ten people were arrested in Paris that night, with even fewer arrests recorded in other parts of the country.

Police described the operation as highly successful, noting that the vast majority of supporters celebrated peacefully.

According to police, the Paris arrests involved four people held for violence involving a weapon and conspiracy to commit violence, three for firing firework rockets in the northern suburbs, and three for mobile phone theft.

They added that the figures were lower than what would typically be expected on a normal night when people go out to enjoy themselves.

Unfortunately, the unrest instead spread to England, as chaos broke out on the streets of London.

While many had expected the French capital to erupt into violence that Thursday night, it was instead its British counterpart that saw the disorder.

One police officer was hit in the head and hospitalised while attempting to calm the World Cup crowd.

Footage shows cops in riot gear swarming Edgware Road as they try to ward off a large crowd.

A police officer can be seen lying on the ground blocked by two riot vans as he is treated by paramedics.
