Senior secondary school students preparing for major national examinations will face a new financial reality as the Federal Government approves a higher registration fee.

The Federal Government has approved a new examination fee of ₦50,000 for candidates sitting the West African Examinations Council and National Examinations Council Senior School Certificate Examinations, with the new rate taking effect from 2027.
The approval was contained in a June 18 statement signed by Adeniji Ibrahim, Director of Senior Secondary Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, following a request by WAEC for an upward review of the SSCE registration fee.
The new fee represents an 82 per cent increase from the current ₦27,500 charged per candidate.
According to Ibrahim, the decision followed a March 31, 2026 meeting between the Minister of Education and examination bodies, where the need to review examination fees was discussed.
He said the minister also directed both WAEC and NECO to adopt a uniform examination fee, noting that at the meeting, the minister had directed that both bodies adopt a common fee structure for the conduct of the SSCE.
He added that he had accordingly been directed to convey the minister's approval of ₦50,000 as the new examination fee per candidate, effective from the NECO SSCE (Internal) 2027 examination.
The ministry said the directive should be communicated to all relevant stakeholders.
