The Delta State Government says it will take delivery of 50 Compressed Natural Gas buses within the next four to five months as part of plans to roll out a mass transit system across the state.

Commissioner for Transport, Mr Onoriode Agofure, disclosed this during a media briefing on Thursday, explaining that the procurement process had already begun following Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's approval of the project.

Agofure said the buses would offer residents a more affordable, safer and comfortable means of transportation on both inter-city routes and within the Asaba metropolis, adding that the government had already identified the specific routes the buses would operate on to ensure efficient service once the scheme launches.

He described the 50 buses as the pilot phase of the initiative, noting that additional buses would be procured should the programme prove successful.

He said the approved buses would be deployed within four to five months, providing a cheap, safe and comfortable way for residents to move around the state.

The commissioner added that the government was also constructing modern bus terminals in Asaba and Warri to support the mass transit scheme and strengthen public transport infrastructure, while putting in place policies and legal frameworks to ensure the programme's sustainability beyond the current administration.

He noted that the initiative would generate employment for drivers, ticketing officers, cleaners and traders operating within the terminals, while boosting economic activity across the state.

He added that although the scheme would initially focus on road transport in upland communities, the government planned to eventually extend services to riverine areas as well.

Also speaking, Director of Vehicle Inspection Services, Engr. Vincent Ehiwario, commended Governor Oborevwori and the Commissioner for Transport for ongoing reforms in the transport sector, which he said include automated vehicle inspections, road safety awareness campaigns, and plans to review transport laws to strengthen electronic enforcement and improve traffic management across the state.
