The Inspector-General of Police has issued a strong message to newly promoted senior officers, reminding them that their new ranks come with greater expectations.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has urged the newly promoted Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) to maintain the utmost standards of integrity, professionalism and accountability.
He stressed that their promotions signify the onset of greater responsibilities rather than a mere reward for past accomplishments.
During the decoration ceremony for the newly promoted senior officers, the IGP congratulated them for reaching another significant milestone in their careers, describing the promotions as a well-deserved acknowledgment of their commitment, resilience and years of exemplary service to the Nigeria Police Force.
He noted that the officers had earned the trust of the Force through their professionalism and steadfast dedication to duty.
The police chief acknowledged the significant sacrifices made by police personnel throughout their service, including prolonged separation from their families, difficult working conditions, and the pressure of meeting public expectations.
He said he understood the toll of serving under such circumstances, noting that many of the officers had personally endured missed birthdays, months away from home, and nights in the field while their families longed for their presence, adding that such sacrifices had not gone unnoticed.
He reminded the newly promoted officers that their elevated ranks now positioned them as role models for junior officers who would look up to them for leadership and guidance, stressing that the rank was not merely a reward for past achievements but a reflection of the Force's confidence in their future contributions, with their character expected to set the example and their discipline the standard.
He urged them to lead with unwavering integrity, cautioning against corruption, abuse of power and other forms of misconduct, stating that he expected them to show zero tolerance for such vices while also leading with compassion, since officers under their command would be watching to see whether they genuinely cared for them as individuals and not merely as personnel.
The IGP further stressed the importance of building a modern, intelligence-driven and technology-oriented police force while strengthening ties with local communities, noting that the ultimate goal remains safer streets, protected families, and communities that trust the police.
He emphasised that public trust is not simply a public relations exercise, but the difference between obtaining life-saving information and the silence that follows when trust breaks down.
He reassured the officers of the police leadership's continued commitment to their welfare, skill development and professional growth, while urging them to mentor junior personnel and uphold the core values of the Force.
Addressing the families of the officers, he acknowledged their steadfast support and sacrifices, stating that the promotions were as much a reflection of the families' resilience as the officers' own achievements, noting that every assignment faced alone, every worry silently carried, and every sacrifice made without recognition had contributed to this accomplishment.
The IGP also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his continued support to the Nigeria Police Force and commended the Police Service Commission for ensuring that the promotion process remained transparent, fair and credible.
He concluded by urging the newly decorated AIGs and CPs to wear their new ranks with humility and pride, reminding them that younger officers now look up to them as role models, and charged them to lead in ways that inspire hope as the Force continues working to remain professional, disciplined, accountable and committed to serving the Nigerian people.
