The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has disclosed that he never collected a naira from security votes throughout his eight years as governor of Kano State.

Kwankwaso made the remark while insisting that calls for state police stem from a huge failure of leadership in Northern Nigeria.

He spoke in an interview on a television programme, where he was asked how an NDC administration, if voted into power, would fight corruption.

He said the fight against corruption would start from within, stressing that his own hands are clean, having never collected a naira from security votes in his eight years as governor.

He added that Nigerians are good people who always expect good governance, and that his party is working to establish a system that could genuinely work for the country.

He maintained that the agitation for state police is rooted in a broader failure of leadership across Northern Nigeria.

The former governor further insisted that state police carry significant dangers, arguing that governors could be tempted to use them for political protection.

He also stressed that no Hisbah operative anywhere carries guns, warning that government must not allow the circulation of small arms so freely.
