On Wednesday, at least five Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade (GAPOSA) students in Ogun State were reportedly abducted by suspected gunmen.

According to an online news portal, the incident began at 8 p.m. on Wednesday when the attackers broke into a private student housing on Paraga Road in Ipara-Remo, one of the towns bordering the polytechnic.

The attack reportedly lasted around 30 minutes, during which the assailants allegedly shot gunsh0ts and abducted numerous pupils.

Following the incident, the polytechnic management suspended all examinations scheduled for Thursday.

A notice from the school stated that Thursday's examination had been cancelled following the unfortunate incident, though Friday's examination remained scheduled as planned, with any changes to be communicated promptly.

Students were encouraged to remain calm, stay positive, and continue preparing for their examinations, with the management expressing hope that the situation would soon be resolved.

The Students' Union Government (SUG) confirmed that five students were affected. In a joint statement signed by SUG President Akinpelu Bukunmi Timothy, General Secretary Salau Boluwaduro Saidat, and Public Relations Officer Matthew Francis Sonayon.

The union explained that the affected hostel was situated in a remote, bush-surrounded area that made it vulnerable and unsuitable as safe student accommodation.

According to the union, suspected armed b@ndits stormed the private hostel along Paraga Road, Ipara, at about 7:45pm, and the att@ck lasted roughly 30 minutes. Due to the hostel's isolated location, nearby residents were unable to hear or respond in time.

The union said gunsh0ts were fired during the att@ck but confirmed that no student lost their life, noting that several students managed to escape through the ceiling while others could not flee in time.

They confirmed that five students were abd*cted, and said the matter had been formally reported to the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies, expressing confidence that efforts were underway to secure the safe rescue of the victims.

The union urged students, parents, guardians and the public to disregard false, exaggerated and unverified information circulating on social media, stressing that while the incident itself was real and unfortunate, many of the accounts in circulation misrepresented the facts and were only stoking unnecessary fear and panic within the school community.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the abdction but said the command had yet to ascertain whether the victims were students.

He said the Ogun State Police Command was aware of the abdction reported at a private hostel in the Ipara area on the night of Wednesday, July 29, 2026, and that upon receiving the distress report, the command activated a coordinated operational response, deploying tactical teams and intelligence assets to the area.

He added that bush-combing and other targeted operations were ongoing to ensure the safe rescue of the victims and the apprehension of those responsible, noting that the exact number of victims had yet to be confirmed as verification and investigation continued.

He urged the public to disregard unverified figures and avoid spreading misinformation that could undermine ongoing operations.

This development comes barely 24 hours after a final-year female marketing student of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, was k!lled during an overnight robb£ry in the Eruku area of the community.
