The Anambra First Lady has renewed calls for mothers to prioritise breastfeeding, highlighting its role in giving children a stronger start in life.

Dr. Nonye Soludo, wife of Anambra State Governor, has urged women throughout the country to prioritize exclusive breastfeeding for their kids, describing it as a valuable gift that promotes healthy growth, increases immunity, and develops a long-term link between mother and child.
In a statement marking the start of World Breastfeeding Week 2026, Soludo, founder of the "Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo" initiative, said every child deserves the healthiest possible start in life, noting that quality breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to achieve that.
She encouraged expectant and nursing mothers across the country to embrace exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, in line with health experts' recommendations.
According to her, as the world marks this year's breastfeeding week, she celebrates every mother who continues to make sacrifices to nurture and protect her child, describing breastfeeding as a priceless gift with lasting benefits for both mother and baby.
She specifically urged expectant and nursing mothers in Anambra State to practise exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a child's life, stressing that no water, herbal mixtures or other foods are necessary during this period, as exclusive breastfeeding provides babies with all the nutrients they need, protects them from infections, and significantly helps reduce childhood illness and mortality.
She added that through her Healthy Living advocacy and the state government's various maternal and child health programmes, efforts would continue to promote awareness, education and support for mothers and families, reiterating a commitment to building an Anambra where every mother feels empowered to breastfeed with confidence and every child is given the chance to thrive from birth.
World Breastfeeding Week, observed globally from August 1 to 7 by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, alongside the World Health Organisation and UNICEF, carries the theme "Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works" this year.
