Hundreds of University of Calabar students have been hit by a major academic setback after the institution reviewed their admission status into the Faculty of Law.

214 LLB II students who were initially rejected from the Faculty of Law have had their expectations dashed by the University of Calabar (Unical) administration, which has ordered them to return to their original departments right now.
The LLB II class, the University's Management, the Law Faculty Management, and the President and Vice President of the Law Students' Association of Nigeria, UNICAL Chapter, LAWSAN-UCC, all attended the meeting on Tuesday, August 5, 2026, where this decision was made.
According to a press statement issued by the Executive Council of the Law Students' Association of Nigeria, Unical Chapter, during the meeting, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Offiong Offiong, revealed that only 221 of the 435 students currently enrolled in the LLB II class were officially admitted by the school, while others transferred from other courses.
“Those students who entered the faculty through other departments will not be eligible to proceed to the Nigerian Law School if they continued in the Faculty of Law under their current admission status,” LAWSAN-UCC declared in the release.
According to the group, as part of its initial efforts, the university has temporarily shut the portals of the 214 students, allowing them to transfer to their original departments.
"The management announced two relief measures to cushion the effect of the decision on the affected students: Full refund of school fees paid for the 2025/2026 academic session and Free tuition for the 2026/2027 academic session in their original departments, to be borne by the University," it stated.
According to the statement, the publication's purpose was to keep faculty members informed of the decisions made.
The association acknowledged the “emotional impact of this development” and urged students to remain calm, supportive, and respectful as the process unfolds. It added that further official updates will be communicated to the affected students.
