Zamfara State Government has initiated the distribution of 700 clean cooking stoves and cooking vessels to households across the state as part of efforts to mitigate climate change and address deforestation.

The beneficiaries, selected from all 14 Local Government Areas, received the items at an official ceremony in Gusau.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Dr. Abdurrahman Muhammad Tumbido, explained that the programme seeks to encourage households to transition to cleaner and more efficient cooking methods while tackling environmental degradation and health risks stemming from heavy reliance on firewood collection.

Tumbido noted that the initiative forms part of the state's wider environmental sustainability strategy, emphasising its role in forest conservation and climate resilience across Zamfara State.

At the distribution ceremony, Deputy Governor Mani Mummuni, representing Governor Dauda Lawal, urged recipients to utilise the stoves appropriately and cautioned against reselling them.

He stressed that the programme was designed to improve household welfare whilst reducing the indiscriminate harvesting of trees for fuel.
