Chad is preparing to open its borders wider to African travellers from January 2027, joining a growing movement toward easier movement across the continent.

Chad has declared it will eliminate entry visa requirements for all African nationals effective January 1, 2027, positioning itself among an expanding cohort of continental nations implementing visa-free travel for African residents.
President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno announced the decision during the opening of the African Water Forum in N'Djamena, characterising it as a substantive contribution toward African continental integration and facilitation of unrestricted movement of people and merchandise across the region.
He framed the measure as an expression of solidarity and a commitment to unity.
The announcement elevates Chad to the eighth African state implementing blanket visa exemptions for continental citizens.
Countries that have adopted comparable open-border frameworks include Benin Republic, The Gambia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Ghana, Kenya and Togo, with the Republic of Congo announcing identical measures commencing January 1, 2027.
In May 2026, Togo enabled African passport holders to enter without visas.
The policy aligns with African Union aspirations articulated under Agenda 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area framework, both emphasising unencumbered population movement as fundamental to economic interrelation.
Chad, positioned at the convergence of Central, West, East and North African regions, characterised the initiative as facilitating business movement, tourism, diplomatic engagement and cross-frontier commerce.
The African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation endorsed Chad's decision, describing it as a consequential stride toward dismantling restrictions constraining workers, investors and commercial enterprises from maximising AfCFTA-generated prospects.
The labour body urged Nigeria and other African states to adopt comparable approaches.
The confederation emphasised that continental economic integration remains impeded while population mobility faces restrictions, stressing that economic activity depends on human agency rather than autonomous goods circulation.
Practical implementation frameworks, including border procedures, potential requirements for specific traveller classifications and precise duration specifications for visa-free residency, remain subject to clarification during ensuing months.
Existing procedures remain applicable for travellers from nations not presently exempt, with Chad's e-visa system continuing in effect until new regulations commence operation.
