Sheikh Jingir Refuses To Back Down On Muslim Muslim Ticket

Islamic cleric and head of the Izala Scholars Council, Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, has reaffirmed his position endorsing a Muslim-Muslim presidential arrangement, dismissing mounting criticism directed at his stance.

Speaking online on Wednesday, Jingir maintained that his declaration stems from religious obligation rather than partisan political calculations or promotion of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Jingir stated his intention to persistently advocate for Muslim voters to support the Muslim-Muslim ticket configuration, regardless of pushback his position generates.

He traced his decision to the president's adoption of this electoral approach, asserting that as a religious scholar, he possesses the prerogative to promote political structures aligned with his faith convictions.

The cleric had previously articulated this position during a mass marriage ceremony organised by Kano State Government for 1,500 couples, urging Muslims to utilise their numerical strength at the ballot box.

He further contested assertions that Christian or other religious populations exceed Muslims in Nigeria's demographic composition.

The remarks have triggered divergent reactions.

Critics have characterised them as divisive and capable of fracturing religious harmony, whilst supporters have defended his entitlement to express religious and political perspectives.

Political analysts anticipate the comments could consolidate backing from Muslim voters who supported the arrangement in 2023, though they caution that the position risks alienating non-Muslim constituencies who previously endorsed President Tinubu.
