A ferry capsized on Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba, killing 15 people and leaving at least 27 missing as rescue operations continue.
Fifteen people have died after a passenger ferry capsized on Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba on Tuesday, with at least 27 others, including young children, still missing.
A local official told state-owned The Herald newspaper that 15 bodies had been recovered as rescue teams continued searching the lake for passengers who remain unaccounted for.
Police said the ferry was carrying 90 passengers and five crew members when it overturned on Lake Kariba.
Authorities had not immediately provided figures for those rescued or confirmed whether all passengers had been accounted for.
However, the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation cited a local official as saying 114 tickets had been issued for the journey.
The figure suggests more people may have been aboard the vessel than the number given by police.
The conflicting figures have raised questions about the total number of people on board when the ferry capsized and the number still missing.
Search and rescue operations are continuing as authorities work to locate those unaccounted for and determine the full circumstances surrounding the disaster.
A police spokesperson had not responded to requests for comment on Wednesday as recovery efforts continued.
