Ondo State has taken a major step that could change how electricity is generated, distributed and managed across the state.

Ondo State's Governor has signed into law new electricity sector legislation that establishes a comprehensive regulatory and operational framework governing power generation, distribution and transmission throughout the state.
The legislation creates the State Electricity Regulatory Commission to manage tariff-setting, licensing, investment approvals, mini-grid operations, renewable energy initiatives and related electricity activities.
It further provides for establishment of a State Independent System Operator and State Market Operator to facilitate the development of a more efficient and competitive power market within the state's borders.
Among the law's principal features are mandatory metering requirements, safeguards for community and private electricity infrastructure investments, and enforcement mechanisms penalising infrastructure sabotage.
The legislation also establishes an Equipment Standards and Competence Certification Agency tasked with validating electrical equipment compliance and verifying that sector professionals meet applicable competency benchmarks.
The new framework strengthens the capacity of the Ondo State Power Company whilst offering enhanced protections and regulatory transparency to encourage private capital deployment across electricity generation, distribution, renewable energy and associated infrastructure development.
The state government characterised the law as a strategic tool designed to unlock private sector engagement, broaden electricity availability across communities and accelerate renewable energy adoption.
Officials indicated that consolidating regulatory and market institutions would impose greater operational discipline on the electricity sector whilst bolstering stakeholder confidence.
The government noted that infrastructure protection provisions and sabotage deterrents would shield investments from disruption and enhance supply reliability.
Through this legislative intervention, Ondo State aims to position its electricity sector as a catalyst for industrial expansion, wealth creation and environmentally sustainable energy growth.
