A major security operation in Accra has disrupted an alleged robbery plot targeting three banks in the same area.

The Ghana Police Service has detained a suspected member of a robbery syndicate and fatally engaged two others during a foiled attempt to rob three banks in Labone, Accra.
The arrested suspect was identified as Augustine Okechuku Maazi.
According to a statement released online on Thursday, police received intelligence at approximately 10:45am on August 13, 2026, that a criminal gang was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank, all situated in Labone.
A police unit was immediately deployed to the area where gang members were spotted in vehicles parked near the targeted institutions.
Upon spotting the police, one vehicle attempted to flee. Officers pursued and apprehended suspect Augustine Okechuku Maazi, though the other occupant escaped.
The occupants of a second vehicle also attempted to flee while firing weapons. Police engaged them in a shootout, resulting in the deaths of two suspects.
Police recovered two vehicles a Toyota Highlander and a Hyundai Tucson as well as a blow pistol.

Maazi is in custody assisting with the investigation, while the bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at a morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
The Ghana Police Service commended the response team for thwarting the planned robbery and urged the public to continue providing credible information about criminal activities.
