Heavy rainfall has forced the traditional ruler of Obosi Kingdom in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State to vacate his palace after floodwaters submerged the entire structure, including several expensive vehicles parked in the compound.

The monarch departed the residence as inundation rendered it uninhabitable.

Anambra State has experienced sustained heavy rainfall over recent days, disrupting economic activities and causing widespread flooding in various communities.

Ogidi, where the palace is situated, has long struggled with chronic flood and erosion problems.

A section of the town along the Awka-Onitsha old road has remained impassable for years, forcing numerous residents to abandon their homes.

The state government has repeatedly assured residents of infrastructure improvements in the affected area. Last year, shortly before the state gubernatorial election, the governor visited the flooded section and pledged to address the road condition.

As of the reporting date, no construction work has commenced on the deteriorated portion, resulting in continued inundation of homes and businesses.

A social media commentary noted the prolonged nature of Ogidi's flooding crisis despite the gubernatorial visit and commitment.

The commentator indicated that in September-October 2025, residents of Ogidi collectively raised N50 million but allocated it toward gubernatorial campaign efforts rather than infrastructure development, erosion control or water management initiatives.

The funds could have resolved approximately 40 per cent of the community's flooding challenges, according to the observation, yet were instead directed toward political activities.

As of the time of reporting, the location to which the traditional ruler relocated remained unclear.
