A House of Representatives member has pushed back against growing criticism of the FCT Minister over flooding in Abuja, saying residents may also be contributing to the problem.

A lawmaker from the House of Representatives has spoken up to defend the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory against criticism over recent flooding in Abuja.
Philip Agbese said residents also need to take responsibility for actions that make flooding worse.
Agbese, a Labour Party representative from Benue State, argued it was unfair to blame the minister for the flooding problem.
He said the FCT Administration had started many infrastructure projects to improve roads, drainage systems, transportation and other facilities across the territory.
He compared blaming the minister to the Israelites blaming Moses for leading them to safety, saying people need to recognise good leadership and understand that government cannot fix everything alone without people's help.
Agbese noted that the administration had expanded development beyond central Abuja into smaller towns.
Out of 317 kilometres of roads awarded in these towns, 221 kilometres have been completed since the current president took office.
He mentioned several major completed projects, including interchanges, roads and sections of an expressway.
The lawmaker said the minister deserves recognition for his work, even though some residents keep focusing on problems.
He used a Biblical comparison, saying the minister was like a prophet not honoured in his own home being celebrated globally while some people at home criticise him.
Agbese stressed that flooding should be seen as a shared responsibility in a fast-growing city like Abuja, where more people, construction and activities put pressure on drainage systems and natural waterways.
He specifically pointed to people dumping garbage as a major cause of worsening floods in some areas.
Residents often block drainage channels and waterways with waste before heavy rains fall, making it impossible for water to flow properly.
The lawmaker urged residents to stop using waterways as dumping grounds and to report blocked or damaged waterways to authorities.
He also called on the FCT Administration to keep investing in drainage and flood control while enforcing laws against dumping and encroachment.
Agbese said residents should see themselves as partners in developing Abuja, not just beneficiaries of government projects.
He urged people to work with the administration to protect infrastructure and keep communities clean, saying both government and citizens have roles to play.
