The head of Nigeria's National Youth Service Corps has told corps members to stay out of political campaigns and not to use their NYSC status or social media to support any political party or candidate before the 2027 elections.
He also cautioned them to be skeptical of false information and fake content made by artificial intelligence.
They should verify facts before sharing or reposting anything online.
He gave these warnings during a visit to a training camp in Katsina where new corps members are completing their orientation course.
Corps members are expected to remain politically neutral during their service year.
Those caught using their NYSC identity online to promote political parties could face punishment.
With advances in AI making it easier to create convincing fake photos and videos, he urged the young people to check where information comes from, figure out when videos or images were made, and spot signs of digital tampering before they pass anything along.
Corps members will have an important job during the 2027 elections, serving as temporary officials during voting.
He described this as a civic responsibility and said they need to do the work fairly to help ensure elections are credible, free and honest.
He also pushed them to take part in the NYSC's skills and business training programs, saying those abilities could help them compete better in today's tough job market.
About 1,333 corps members are taking the orientation course in Katsina, split fairly evenly between men and women.
The course runs from early August to August 25.
Medical staff at the camp have treated hundreds of the young people for common illnesses like malaria, typhoid and blood pressure issues, with a few sent to the general hospital.
