A plane carrying people crashed at a remote US military radar station in Alaska on Thursday.

The aircraft was a civilian plane hired by the military and went down at an airport near Cape Newenham on the southwestern coast of the state.

Rescue teams who got to the crash site confirmed that nobody survived the crash.

The military did not say what the people on board were supposed to be doing at the radar station, which is used to monitor aircraft flying over Alaska's airspace.

Military officials said they are still investigating what caused the crash.

They have not yet released the names of those who died, saying they will do so only after the families have been told what happened.

The head of the Alaska military command said the crash is a heavy loss for everyone involved.

He described the people who were on the plane as dedicated workers who were doing important work in very difficult conditions.
