Lagos State's Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, has told young workers not to spend more than 40 percent of what they earn on rent.
The Deputy Governor, who is also running for governor in the 2027 election, made the comments on a radio station and stressed that starting out in life does not mean moving into an expensive place.
He said young people should not feel rushed to get their own fancy apartment when they first start working.
Living at home with parents or with relatives can help ease the financial burden, he explained.
He pointed out that in many cultures around the world, young adults live with family while building their careers and earning more money.
Starting with modest accommodation perhaps a small one-bedroom place is the sensible approach, he said.
As income grows, people can move up to better housing.
The Deputy Governor explained his 40 percent rule by noting that workers still need money for other important things like food, clothing, and getting around.
If someone uses more than 40 percent of their pay for rent, they will struggle to afford everything else they need.
He said young workers can begin with smaller living spaces and upgrade as they earn more money.
Beyond just advising individuals on spending habits, the Deputy Governor stressed that the government needs to help too.
He said the economy needs to be strengthened so that people earn better wages overall.
When people make more money, housing becomes more affordable for everyone, and everyone's quality of life improves, he added.
