The Academic Staff Union of Universities at the University of Medical Sciences in Ondo has begun an indefinite strike over the state government's failure to implement an agreement and pay outstanding salaries.

The decision came after a congress meeting where members agreed that a 14-day deadline they had given to the university and state government had expired without action.

The union said the 2025 Federal Government agreement with ASUU had not been implemented at the school and arrears dating back to January 1, 2026 had not been paid.

From 11:25 a.m. on Thursday, all academic staff stopped teaching and halted all academic work.

This affects lectures, tests, exams and seminars for undergraduate, postgraduate and conversion students.

All departmental, faculty, committee and Senate meetings have also been stopped, whether held in person or online.

The union has also suspended supervision of student research projects, industrial training and fieldwork. All other academic duties have been put on hold.

The strike will continue until the university fully implements the agreement and pays all money owed from January 1, 2026 onwards.

The union said the state government's failure to act despite the warning was deeply disappointing.

Union leaders have directed the branch executive to speak to the media and public about the situation.

They have also activated a strike monitoring committee to make sure members comply with the directive.

The strike at UNIMEDO is part of a wider crisis in Ondo State's universities.

Two other schools, Adekunle Ajasin University and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, have also embarked on indefinite strikes over the same issues.
