A woman has raised concern online after her newly installed air conditioner started releasing what looked like white smoke.
It was her first time installing an AC unit and she was not sure if what she was seeing was normal or a sign that something was wrong.
She posted on social media asking for help. "Just installed an AC for the first time and it's giving off this weird white smoke.
Is that normal or I should call a technician?" she wrote.
Her question caught attention because unusual smoke from an electrical appliance, especially a brand new one, can understandably worry people.
The white vapour could be mist or condensation coming from the unit, but actual smoke, a burning smell, strange noises or signs of overheating should not be ignored.
The safest thing to do if an appliance seems faulty is to turn it off and call a qualified technician rather than trying to fix it yourself.
For safety reasons, people should not attempt repairs on electrical equipment unless they know what they are doing.
The post started a discussion about what homeowners should watch for when they use an air conditioner for the first time.
Many people face this same question when they get a new appliance and are not sure if something odd they notice is normal or something to worry about.
Until the woman finds out what is causing the white substance, the best approach is to have someone check the installation and unit if the white smoke continues or if other warning signs show up.
