Two people have died after a waste dump collapsed onto a building in Calabar, Cross River State.

Two people have been officially declared died as a result of the collapse of a garbage dump at Ikot Effanga on Old Odukpani Road in Calabar, Cross River State.
This was revealed by the Cross River State Police Command on Friday in a statement that ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the police public relations officer, signed.
The statement claims that the tragedy happened early on Friday, August 28, 2026, when a structure that was allegedly built in a valley was struck by the collapsing rubble.
"The Cross River State Police Command is aware of a reported incident involving the collapse of a refuse dump at Ikot Effanga, along the Old Odukpani Road, Calabar, in the early hours of Friday, August 28, 2026," the statement said.
"Police officers arrived on the scene quickly and found that two people had died as a result of the collapsed trash striking a building that was allegedly built in a valley."
The casualties were identified in the statement as Nfon Imé, a male, and an unidentified female who were reportedly present in the building when the incident occurred.
Their remains were found and placed in the morgue.
According to the announcement, "the deceased, identified as Nfon Imé 'm,' and an unidentified female, thought to have been in the building at the time of the incident, have been recovered and deposited at the mortuary."
The police spokeswoman stated that while additional inquiry had begun, an evaluation of the circumstances surrounding the occurrence was still in progress.
ASP Eitokpah stated, "While additional investigation is ongoing, the Command is currently conducting an assessment of the circumstances surrounding the incident."
While efforts were underway to determine the complete circumstances surrounding the incident, the leadership asked the public to maintain composure and refrain from speculating.
"More information will be shared as soon as it is confirmed and accessible," the message continued.
