A South African man has been sent to prison for 20 years after sexually assaulting his mother at her home.
The 22-year-old was sentenced by a court in the Northern Cape province after DNA evidence proved he committed the crime in November 2025.
The man's 42-year-old mother was home with her partner one night after they had both been drinking and gone to sleep.
The son had also been drinking at a friend's house before returning home.
Finding his mother and her partner asleep, he sexually assaulted his mother while she was unconscious.
She woke during the assault and realised what was happening.
After confronting her son, he ran out of the house.
She told her partner what had occurred and they reported it to police.
The man initially denied the allegation when arrested, but DNA evidence connected him to the crime.
Faced with this proof along with his mother's testimony, he eventually pleaded guilty.
His mother told the court during her victim impact statement that she was devastated and betrayed by her son, whom she had raised as a single parent.
She said the assault continues to torment her.
She receives counselling and struggles to sleep because of the trauma.
The court took his guilty plea into account but found the seriousness of the offence warranted a lengthy sentence.
The man was ordered to serve 20 years and his details were placed on the national sex offenders register.
