Nigeria's FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has accused Rotimi Amaechi, the vice presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, of closing down courts in Rivers State when he was governor, which allegedly resulted in a pregnant woman giving birth in prison.

Wike made the accusation during his monthly media briefing with journalists on Wednesday.

He said that when Amaechi governed Rivers State from 2007 to 2015, he shut down the judicial system, forcing a pregnant woman to deliver her baby while locked up.

Wike also criticized the Nigerian Bar Association for giving Amaechi a platform to speak at their recently concluded annual conference in Port Harcourt.

He said that if someone deliberately shuts down courts, they should not be allowed to defend such actions in public forums.

He drew a comparison, saying if he as FCT minister were to shut down courts, he would not deserve such a platform either.

The remarks come as Amaechi campaigns as the ADC's running mate ahead of next year's presidential election.
