A fintech company has asked the secret police and police to investigate false rumors spreading online that it is shutting down.
The company's legal counsel said at a press conference in Lagos on Wednesday that the rumor was serious enough to harm Nigeria's financial system and cost customers money.
A viral message circulating across social media on Sunday urged customers to withdraw their funds before an alleged shutdown.
The company strongly denied this, stating it continues operating normally in Nigeria and will prosecute anyone involved in spreading the lie.
The company's officers stressed that Nigerians should verify information before making financial decisions based on social media messages.
They pointed out that even messages that look official and are shared widely can still be completely false. Just because thousands of people share something does not make it true.
The company noted that Nigeria's central bank, the main regulator of the financial industry, has also stepped in to debunk the rumor.
This shows how seriously authorities view the matter and why Nigerians should ignore any other messages suggesting the company is shutting down.
The company said it remains fully committed to operating within Nigeria's rules and continues to work openly with regulators.
All operations are running smoothly with no disruptions.
The false shutdown rumors come as the fintech company is preparing to list its shares on the US stock exchange and the Nigerian stock exchange.
The company currently operates in four countries, with Nigeria as its biggest market, accounting for most of its revenue.
