A simple government handout is coming under fresh security scrutiny as Nigeria’s Defence Minister warns that motorcycles meant to help communities may be ending up somewhere far more dangerous.

Defence Minister General Christopher Musa (retd.) has cautioned state governors and lawmakers against distributing motorcycles as palliatives or through constituency projects, warning that many of these bikes inevitably end up in the hands of t3rrorists and b@ndits who use them to carry out operations.
Speaking during an interview on a current affairs television programme on Thursday, Musa explained the security risk clearly.
Motorcycles give criminals a significant tactical advantage because they can navigate rough terrain, move quickly across territories and escape from security forces before operatives can respond.
This mobility makes it far easier for t3rrorists to launch @tt@cks and disappear.
The Defence Minister urged governors in particular to abandon or drastically limit the motorcycle distribution practice.
If governments insist on giving out bikes, he suggested they should restrict themselves to small-capacity models that criminals cannot effectively use for rapid movement and escape.
Large-capacity motorcycles, by contrast, provide precisely the speed and flexibility that t3rrorists need to operate freely.
Musa stressed the same concern applies to lawmakers distributing motorcycles through constituency projects and development programmes.
Before long, he explained, many of these vehicles make their way to b@ndit networks where they become operational assets used in criminal activities.
Security agencies have also identified a wider threat.
Illegal markets and illicit motor parks have become established networks through which t3rrorists transport weapons and ammunition into their areas of operation.
These underground trading hubs serve as transit points where criminals move military supplies with relative ease, undermining security efforts across affected regions.
