Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate and former Anambra State Governor, has painted a grim picture of Nigeria's economic decline, arguing that several vital sectors that once thrived have now completely collapsed.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Rivers State, Obi highlighted the dramatic gap between Nigeria's historical performance and current standing in key industries.

He drew particular attention to shipping and aviation, two sectors where Nigeria once showed considerable promise.

Obi recalled that Nigeria's National Shipping Line owned six vessels in 1959, expanding to eight vessels by 1961 with steady growth expected.

Today, he stressed, the fleet has dwindled to zero.

The contrast with international competitors is stark.

Emirates Airlines, which only began operations in 1985 with two leased aircraft, now operates over two hundred and eighty planes globally.

At the time Emirates was starting, Nigeria already possessed over twenty aircraft, yet the country's aviation fleet has since shrunk to nothing.

Beyond infrastructure, Obi expressed deep concerns about Nigeria's healthcare system.

The state of medical facilities has deteriorated so badly that seriously ill Nigerians face genuine risk of dying in hospitals rather than receiving proper treatment.

This crisis has forced many families to resort to taking sick relatives to churches for prayers instead of seeking hospital care, reflecting widespread loss of confidence in the healthcare system.

Obi's remarks have sparked widespread discussion among Nigerians, with many engaging in broader debates about the state of the country's aviation, shipping and healthcare sectors and what has caused their decline.
