Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has called on Northern leaders to prioritize education as a way to tackle the Almajiri system, which he says is holding back the region's economic and human development.
Mutfwang made the appeal on Saturday in Adamawa State while speaking at the 70th birthday celebration of former government secretary Boss Mustapha.
The event also marked the opening of a library and administrative blocks at the Lutheran University of Nigeria that Mustapha had built.
The governor stressed that education is key to promoting peace and economic growth, and said addressing the Almajiri problem would require commitment from Northern leaders.
He also highlighted the role churches have played in spreading education, recalling that former Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa supported churches because of their contribution to teaching and community development.
Mutfwang praised Mustapha for using his own money to build facilities at the university, calling education a foundation for peace and progress.
He noted that the Lutheran Church was the third member of a church alliance to establish a university in the region, showing the church's belief in education for development.
Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri also commended Mustapha for his dedication to education and human development.
He said Mustapha could have invested the money in personal projects but chose instead to support learning.
Fintiri urged other successful people from the state to follow Mustapha's example and invest in education.
Mustapha, speaking at the event, said his desire to help develop education in Nigeria drove him to undertake the project.
He urged people with resources to give back to society and thanked God for his blessings as he marked his 70th birthday.
