Peter Obi's convoy was blocked on a road in Benue State on Tuesday as he tried to enter the state.
The incident happened on Gboko Road when a mob of stick-wielding people stopped his convoy.
Videos showed the group blocking the entire road and moving towards the vehicles.
According to Obi's photographer, it was the only route from the airport into town and the mob prevented him from reaching where he was going.
The Benue State Government denied involvement, saying they weren't aware Obi was visiting and wouldn't use thugs to stop him anyway.
Obi said he wasn't there to campaign but to pay respect to people who lost their lives to insecurity and show solidarity with them.
He expressed concern about how politics is being conducted, saying the incident showed just how bad things have gotten.
He added that his involvement in the APM campaign launch in Abuja was part of his push for peaceful political engagement.
He said Nigeria is the only country we have and it needs to be built on unity and love through doing the right thing.
