A tragic incident in Lagos Island has renewed concerns over the growing danger of mob justice after a man reportedly died following a crowd attack.

The Lagos State Police Command has warned residents against taking the law into their own hands following the m0b k!lling of a man identified as Basit in Lagos Island.
Basit was beaten to d£ath by a crowd in the Patey area after his vehicle struck a pedestrian on Wednesday night, September 2, 2026.
Basit had recently returned to Nigeria from abroad ahead of his wedding scheduled for two weeks later.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Abimbola Adebisi issued a strong warning against jungle justice in a video statement.
SP Abimbola Adebisi said jungle justice is m¥rd€r and a crime, not justice.
She stressed that only law enforcement and courts have the responsibility to investigate offences and determine guilt or innocence.
SP Abimbola Adebisi noted that the Constitution protects fundamental rights including life, dignity, liberty and fair hearing.
Section 36 guarantees the presumption of innocence, meaning anyone accused of a crime remains innocent until a court finds them guilty.
She said no one has the right to beat, torture, burn, stab or stone another person to d£ath, even if they believe that person committed a crime.
SP Abimbola Adebisi explained that Lagos State law criminalises violence against persons including @ss@¥lt, grievous h@rm and unlawful w0¥nding.
The police will treat cases of jungle justice resulting in serious injuries or d£ath as criminal offences.
Anyone who joins a m0b @tt@ck could themselves become a suspect in the criminal investigation.
SP Abimbola Adebisi urged residents to contact police when they witness suspected crime instead of taking action themselves.
She appealed to witnesses of m0b @tt@cks not to remain silent or simply record incidents on their phones.
She said residents should call police immediately when they see a m0b @tt@cking someone.
She warned residents against encouraging m0b @ction, supplying weapons, inciting violence or joining @tt@cks on suspected offenders.
She assured residents that the police command under Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani would investigate jungle justice cases and ensure those responsible face the law.
SP Abimbola Adebisi expressed sympathy to families who lost loved ones to m0b violence.
