A legal battle over the NDC logo has taken an unexpected turn in Abuja, putting INEC under pressure to change what appears on the partys campaign materials.

A court in Abuja has told Nigeria's electoral body to use a new version of the Nigeria Democratic Congress party logo instead of the old one they were using before.

Seriake Dickson, who used to be governor of Bayelsa State and now leads the NDC, announced the court victory.

Justice J.O. Abdulmalik made the decision after the party took the case to court arguing they should be allowed to use the logo approved in their constitution.

The NDC had given their first executive meeting approval for an updated logo design and submitted it to the electoral commission, which initially put it up.

But the commission took it down later without telling the party why and went back to using the old association logo instead.

After the commission refused to fix the problem despite being given chances to do so, the party decided to go to court.

Dickson said the ruling proves the NDC was right all along and shows the court respects proper legal process.

He asked all NDC candidates and members to start using the new approved logo immediately on campaign posters, banners and promotional materials.

Both versions of the logo keep the same two-finger victory symbol, but Dickson made clear the updated one is what the party constitution says to use and is the one more people know.

Dickson acknowledged that some candidates had already spent money preparing materials with the old logo and said the party regrets any trouble caused by switching now.

He called the whole logo argument part of a bigger pattern of obstacles the party has been dealing with.

This issue with the NDC logo is becoming increasingly concerning.

First, there was the logo with the blue sign. Then supporters were told to recognise the logo displayed on the INEC website as the official NDC logo.

Now, NDC has gone to court, and the court has ordered INEC to… pic.twitter.com/IkzgwWGYqJ
