A fake identity scheme targeting unsuspecting Nigerians has been uncovered after criminals allegedly posed as the JAMB registrar online.

Police have uncovered a fraud scheme in which criminals impersonated Segun Aina, the registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, to defraud members of the public.
One suspect, Nwogba Arinze, has been arrested while police continue searching for Nnabuife Nwekpa, identified as the main person behind the scheme.
The syndicate created fake social media accounts using the registrar's identity and name to trick people into sending money.
Police received a complaint from the actual registrar on August 10 alleging criminal conspiracy, impersonation, identity theft and fr@ud.
The investigation initially spread to Nasarawa and Katsina states but discovered that the people tracked there were actually victims who had been defrauded by the criminals posing as the registrar.
Through intelligence work, police analysed the phone numbers and bank account details used in the scheme, which led them to Anambra State.
They arrested Arinze on August 27.
Investigation showed that Arinze had been pretending to be the registrar's personal assistant.
Arinze used the bank account of his deceased nephew, Edeh Chimezie Benedict, to hide his identity and avoid being caught.
He had been given access to the nephew's account details and debit cards to help with funeral arrangements that took place on July 31.
Arinze is now cooperating with investigators to help them arrest Nwekpa and other people involved in the scheme.
