Presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticized President Bola Tinubu, saying the President does not believe in one Nigeria despite being the country's leader.

Obi recalled that Tinubu once said in an interview in 1997 that he does not believe in the unity of Nigeria.

At that time, Tinubu was involved with a pro-democracy group called the National Democratic Coalition that fought against military dictatorship in the 1990s.

After civilian rule returned in 1999, Tinubu became governor of Lagos State.

Speaking on television Thursday, Obi said it is strange that a person who does not believe in one Nigeria is now leading the country as President.

Obi contrasted this with his own position, saying he believes in Nigeria and is committed to the unity of the nation.

However, Obi also noted that while Tinubu made that statement long ago when Obi was very young, people cannot hold events from so far in the past against someone forever.

He said other things have happened since then that should also be considered.
