A debate has emerged about whether cheating should automatically end a relationship, with some people arguing that a partner who commits infidelity once should be forgiven if they show genuine remorse and change their behavior.

This view goes against the common belief that cheating is an unforgivable act of betrayal.

Instead it suggests that whether to stay together should depend on the circumstances and what the couple involved decides.

Some people also question the tendency to judge couples whose relationships may work differently from what society expects.

They argue that if both partners agree to how their relationship operates, including accepting infidelity, then outsiders should not judge them.

However, many people see cheating as a fundamental breach of trust.

The hurt goes beyond the physical or emotional act itself.

It includes the lying, the secrecy and the sense of betrayal.

Relationship experts point out that genuine forgiveness requires real accountability.

A partner who is truly sorry must take responsibility for the pain caused, not just regret being caught.

Rebuilding trust takes time, honesty and actual changes in behavior.

There is an important difference between saying sorry and actually changing.

For the person who was betrayed, forgiveness is a choice, not something they have to do.

The second part of the argument introduces another question.

Different couples set different boundaries.

What one couple sees as betrayal another couple may have agreed to openly.

The key difference is whether both partners genuinely understand and consent to the arrangement.

When cheating is hidden, things become more complicated because one partner decides without the other knowing or agreeing.

Overall, the debate may be less about whether cheating should always be forgiven and more about whether someone can admit wrongdoing, take responsibility and truly change.

For some couples, infidelity ends the relationship.

For others, it becomes a painful chapter they work through together.

Either way, forgiveness is a choice owed to no one.

“If someone cheats once, they should be forgiven if they are remorseful and show sign of change. Well, it's not right to judge a relationship whereby the partners involved are cheating because it might be something that gives them happiness, and a decision between them.”
