Taraba State College of Nursing Sciences is planning to start offering a university level nursing degree within four to five years.

Right now the college trains nurses to get diplomas and higher national diplomas.

But the provost says they want to move up to offering full Bachelor of Nursing Sciences degrees by partnering with Taraba State University.

The college is getting better at everything.

They've tightened admission requirements so students now need five credit passes in science subjects including English, maths, chemistry, physics and biology.

The plan is to keep training nurses at the current level first, then gradually shift to degree programmes.

The state government has been supporting the college heavily.

The governor released money for accreditation from the nursing regulatory body, which is necessary before they can officially start the degree programme.

New equipment is also on the way five containers worth and a newly completed lecture theatre is waiting to be officially opened.

The governor praised the college as one of the best equipped nursing institutions in Nigeria.

He credited his administration for putting in lecture facilities, equipped laboratories, student hostels and improved security.

He charged the graduating nurses to put service to Taraba first before chasing opportunities elsewhere, and told them to treat every patient with compassion and dignity.

He also reminded them that nurses deal with people during their most vulnerable moments, so they need to do more than just treat illness they need to show professionalism and care.

Officials agree the college is important for the state's healthcare future and say government will keep supporting it.
