Nigeria's electoral commission has scheduled by-elections for September 19 in four states to fill vacant legislative seats.

The by-elections will happen in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta.

Voting will run from 8:30am to 2:30pm at polling units in the affected constituencies.

Five seats became empty for different reasons.

In Gombe, a federal constituency representative died in June.

The two Bauchi seats became vacant because one lawmaker died and another resigned to run for a local government chairman position.

In Delta, a state assembly member defected from the ruling party to the opposition, prompting the government to declare his seat vacant.

In Kano, a state assembly member left to contest a federal seat and won that election in June, leaving his state seat empty.

The electoral commission listed the affected constituencies as Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency, Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano, Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi, and Udu State Constituency in Delta.
