The Sokoto State Government has shut down a mosque in Mabera after an Islamic cleric was st@bbed following Friday prayers and his att@cker was k!lled by worshippers in response.
Musa Lukuwa was att@cked with a knife shortly after leading prayers at Lukuwa Jumu'at Mosque.
Worshippers overpowered the man and beat him to d£ath.
Police received a distress call around 1:50pm and preliminary investigations showed the assailant entered after prayers ended and targeted the cleric.
Lukuwa was taken to hospital for treatment.
The cleric later appealed for calm, saying he was in stable condition and urging followers to avoid retaliation that could spark further tensions.
The state government has ordered the mosque closed as a crime scene while authorities investigate.
Officials have also set up a committee of Islamic scholars to examine what caused the religious tensions and advise the government on how to address them.
The government distanced itself from anyone using religion as a cover for disrespecting Prophet Muhammad and his family, reaffirming its "total obedience and respect" for him.
Officials appealed to residents to stop making inflammatory statements that could damage Sokoto's reputation for peace and urged people to remain calm as investigations continue.
The administration promised to protect lives and property across the state.
