The Academic Staff Union of Universities has started an indefinite strike at three universities run by the Lagos State Government because the state has not addressed the union's demands.
The affected schools are Lagos State University, Lagos State University of Education and Lagos State University of Science and Technology.
The union announced the action on Tuesday after a 14-day deadline it gave the state government on August 31 passed without agreement.
The union had also issued a final warning on September 10 that went unheeded, and another deadline on September 13 came and went with no talks happening.
ASUU is demanding that the state implement provisions from a December 2025 agreement it reached with the Federal Government.
This includes the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and welfare benefits for serving and retired academic staff.
The union said it made the decision with reluctance, knowing the strike would affect the academic calendar and the wider university community.
It urged students to remain calm and peaceful while efforts to resolve the dispute continue.
The union also acknowledged concerns of parents and guardians about possible disruption to their children's education.
ASUU clarified that the strike is not aimed at the universities themselves and praised their management for efforts to implement the agreement.
It called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, alumni groups and other stakeholders to support its position and help find a solution.
The union said it had shown considerable patience and made repeated attempts to negotiate with the state government through dialogue.
However, it accused the state of failing to act on outstanding issues even though neighbouring states have already implemented similar agreements.
ASUU's national leadership has endorsed the strike.
The union said the strike will continue until the state government sits down with it, agrees to the December 2025 deal and fully implements the relevant provisions.
